Distractions for Deadwood
by Jacob Busby
Set-up
This minor rules expansion adds extra distractions and Singular effects
to Deadwood, much like the ones seen in Another Day, Another Dollar.
Unlike ADAD, where distractions are triggered by players landing on
the film in question, these distractions should be set aside into two
piles:
- Singular Effects and Distractions. Shuffle the Singular Effects
and put one into play at random, leave the remaining Singular Effects
in a separate pile next to the board. Next shuffle the Distractions
and deal one to each player.
- Place the remaining distractions in a second pile next to the board.
If you are playing with ADAD, the Distraction and Singular Effects
from these sets should be left in the movie stack, as per normal.
Players may play Distractions whenever appropriate, subject to the
rules given on the card. There is no limit to how many Distractions
a player may hold.
At the start of each day, the leading player rolls a dice. If the roll
is LESS than the current day, that player draws a random Singular Effect
from the pile and puts it into play. (Eg. On Day three, a new Singular
Effect is generated if the leading player rolls a 1 or a 2) Singular
Effects can also be changed by drawing them as movies, as per the rules
given in ADAD.
The Mob
Are you 'nsinuating dat de mob controls Deadwood. If so, you'd better
like 'orses 'ead soup, 'cos Fat Toni don't take to kind to slander.
Whilst a player is in Gump Street he may visit an "agent"
who will "arrange for things to happen" - for a fee. Distractions
can be bought for $1, plus $1 per day of the game (eg. A distraction
bought on Day Three would cost $4) and the current Singular Effect can
be changed at a cost of $2 plus $2 per day of the game (A change in
the Singular Effect on day Two would cost $6).
Each player may buy one such "favour" per day.
New Singular Effects
Definition of Singular Effect: Only one Singular Effect can be in play
at any one time. If another Singular Effect comes into play, place the
current Singular Effect onto the discard pile.
TUMBLEWEED
Singular Effect. Whilst Tumbleweed is in play, no player may play Distractions.
LET'S PUT ON A SHOW!
Singular Effect. Whilst this effect is in play, each on-card actor gets
a +1 bonus when trying to advance a scene, for each other actor on the
card. However, if a 1 is rolled by any player trying to advance a scene,
there are artistic differences and the scene is put back by one shot.
PARITY: ACTOR'S UNION
Singular Effect. Whilst this effect is in play, all extras earn an additional
dollar when a movie wraps.
FETCH ME MY DOUGHNUTS
Singular Effect. Whilst this effect is in play, the order of play at
the start of a day is reversed, with the most successful actors and
actresses going first and the least successful ones going last.
AINT-IT-SPOILED-NEWS
Singular Effect. Uh-Oh. Looks like Barry Knowles is spoiling the movies
for everyone. Whilst this effect is in play, all movies are turned face
up instead of face down at the start of each day.
CLAMPDOWN
Singular Effect. Whilst this card is in play, no player may visit the
Mob.
GOSSIP COLUMNS
Singular Effect. Before any player attempts to advance a scene each
player may spend their money to influence the outcome of the roll. The
player who contributes the largest sum may choose to add or subtract
one from the die roll, although a 6 always advances a scene and a 1
never advances it.
ACCELERATED PRODUCTION SCHEDULE
Singular Effect. There's a lack of talent in Deadwood (No kidding!)
and the producers are willing to hire almost anybody for their movies.
Whilst this card is in play, all credits count double for the purposes
of raising reputation, but the last TWO movies are canned.
EXPRESSO COFFEE
Singular Effect. Expresso coffee makes your day go with a zing! Whenever
a player wraps a movie, they may take an extra go.
BACKLASH
Singular Effect. The public is fed up with stars whose large egos. When
this effect comes into play, all players reverse their Reputations by
turning their dice upside down. When this effect leaves play, all players
reverse their reputations again.
New Distractions
WOAH THERE MISTER!
Play this Distraction when another player plays a Distraction. That
Distraction has no effect and you may take it into your hand.
AH'M CALLIN' YOU OUT!
Play this Distraction when you are on a set with an actor who is already
on card and only if their reputation is lower than yours. The actor
on the card loses the role, but suffers no penalty for walking off set
and you take up, but need not lower your reputation to do so.
DARN TOOTIN'
Play this Distraction to automatically advance any one movie by one
scene.
HOGSWASH
Uh-oh! Looks like the press didn't like the last movie very much. Play
this Distraction when a film has wrapped to roll one less die than normal.
HOT DIGGERTY DAMN!!
Looks like that last movie is the Next Big Thing. Play this Distraction
when a film has wrapped to roll one more die than would normally be
rolled.
GIDDYUP!
Play this distraction instead of moving to move to any location within
Deadwood.
ROUND UP THE POSSE.
When you play this Distraction, choose a movie. Starting with the player
to your right, each player may walk off their current role (if they
have one) without losing any reputation and take up a role on that movie
instead. For each player that takes up this offer, you receive one dollar.
THE MYSTERY OF CURLY'S GOLD
And the biggest mystery of them all is why he left you all his money
in his will. Play this Distraction and miss a turn to gain one dice
worth of dollars.
THE HEAD HONCHO
When you play this Distraction you may take up the role of the Director
of a movie, instead of being an actor. The budget for that movie changes
to your Reputation and it is advanced in the usual manner. When the
movie wraps you gain money equal to twice your reputation. If your directorial
debut is the dog of the day, you lose one pip of reputation.
MY MOTHER MAKES THE NOISES AT THE MOVIES...
And she can be very off-putting too. When you play this Distraction,
choose a movie. All rolls to advance that movie become one step more
difficult, although a 6 will always advance the scene.
THE ROY McCLURE SCHOOL OF ACTING
When you play this Distraction, lose one rank of Reputation. From now
until the end of the game, you may use up credits to temporarily raise
you rank. Once the movie is wrapped or canned, your reputation drops
back to its original level.
DARLING, YOU WERE WONDERFUL!
You completely steal the show. Play this Distraction when you are on-card
and wrap a movie. Each other actor on that card loses one rank of reputation
and you gain one rank of reputation for each rank lost in this manner.
GHOST WRITER
Who writes this dreck?!? Well you do as it turns out. Play this Distraction
when you uncover a new movie to discard that movie and draw a new one.
If that movie wraps you gain one dollar as a writing credit, in addition
to any normal rewards.
EXCLUSIVE! SECRETS OF DEADWOOD REVEALED!!!
Play this distraction, lose one rank in reputation and miss a turn to
write your autobiography. You may trade in any number of credits or
half credits for cash. Gain one dollar for each half credit and two
dollars for each full credit. Discard each credit used in this way.
TALENT SCOUT
Play this Distraction when you wrap a movie to automatically gain one
rank of reputation.
